Odd smell in hall way, electrical?
There is an odd smell in the hallway of our home. It smells kind of like burnt electrical but not quite. My wife thought it may be coming from the heater (there are no vents in the hallway only an air intake). I can smell it and have smelled it for a few days. The wife says she has smelled it for some time. I did replace some hallway light bulbs with the screw in fluorescent bulbs on Saturday. Could that be causing a smell? Leaving the lights off and heater off over night we could still smell the odor in the morning. My wife had a heater/ac repair man come out and he could not find a problem or smell the odor but he had a cold and it was not to strong at that time. I did replace some bulbs in the entryway awhile ago with fluorescent bulbs and the wife may be smelling those. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Smells are difficult to troubleshoot, even when I am there , as smells are a popular cause for service calls. Seems you realize about the new lamps, and CF lamps do get hot and are plastic encased, and warm plastic, while not harmful, has an odor, along with adhesives holding the glass in.

A Compact Fluorescent lamp is a busy component, with the glass, phosphor, adhesives, plastic, electronic parts, transformers, etc

The odors usually wear off after use.

Best I can offer is to change back to regular light bulbs and see if the odor leaves, but do your best to keep the CF lamps in the house, they really help with keeping energy costs down, and offer much better lighting.

Just a bit of info, to light a home, usually feels better with "warm" light, so be sure to use only 2700 or 3500 Deg Kelvin color lamps. These imitate the warm "color" of incandescent lamps with more light output.
