    Management union shop stewards?!
    To whom it may concern,
My place of employment, the Toms River branch of the Ocean County Library system in Ocean County, New Jersey already has union representation, but I have some concerns which I would like to ask you about. My main concerns are that not only are our immediate supervisors members of our union, but a few of them are actually our union shop stewards and they are able to file grievances within our union as well. I believe it is a conflict of interests for anyone in a supervisory role to be a union shop steward and though I support their right to form/join a union, I just don't feel that they have a place within our union. Is this activity out of the ordinary? Should supervisors be allowed to join our union? Be shop stewards and file grievances within our union? One woman who is a union member told me that she once attempted to have this changed, attended a union meeting and one of the supervisors/shop stewards told the security guard to throw her out of the meeting. It is activity such as this that leads me to believe it is time to make a change within our union. Any advice or information you could provide me with would be much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

You are right. I can say from experience that a union is only as strong as the people who support it. Making supervisors of union members is an old tactic that gives the company an edge. It is a common practice though since the union can keep the company too honest for their own tastes and the company cannot rule with the iron hand they would like to. Change only comes when people stand up and change things so if you feel something needs changing do so. But beware that unions have their own cliques and pals they give support to. Nothing is perfect it seems.
