How to not be so anxious over my role in a play?
Hello, Okay so this is a lot to unpack here but please stay with me as I have no way to cope. So right now I'm currently on summer vacation before school starts next August, you would think this would be a great time to relax and get everything together before the school year starts, right? Wrong! My drama teacher decided that it would be a great time to post the castings for the school play next year- we're doing Romeo and Juliet (ugh) and West Side Story (yay!). I really wanted to do WSS since it's my dad's favorite movie of all time, and I really like to sing and dance. However I got cast as Lord Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, and I'm super distraught about it. What could my drama see in him (a fat, old, boring, rich guy) that she sees in me? (a slim, young, upbeat, socialist girl) So far she has put out two scripts for Romeo and Juliet that are both over 100 pages long and memorize both of them within less than a month! I can't even enjoy my summer vacation because the ever looming thought of needing to learn all these words are on my mind and I'm constantly anxious about it, I've even started to break down crying and shaking just thinking about having to do it. What do I do?

Me thinks this is much ado about nothing if I can reference Shakespeare here (seemed appropriate). Own the role, make it yours, and live each moment to the fullest. So you didn't get the part that you wanted. Which actor has that not happened to? Having a meaningful life is based on how you handle disappointment. You choose your path. So make the role yours and you will have a great time with it and with the other cast members. Don't make the role yours and you won't.

You can wallow in your disappointment of not getting a juicy role you want, or rise to the challenge of the role you have, and MAKE it work for you.

Your choice. Make a mature decision.
