Need to be a broker to invest in real estate?
I want to give real estate a shot. Office job has become dull and boring nowadays. I just want to start it simple, but can I do it without a real estate broker license? Or, since I'm a resident of New York and being a real estate sales person is the 1-year pre-requisite to become a full-pledged broker... do I need to do all that? Because I just want to try if real estate would fit me... thanks and have a great day! :p

Yes, you need to do all that. If you don't want to, try working in a real estate office for a while in an administrative capacity and see if you like it. Perhaps you can sit with an agent at an open house, etc.

But real estate sales is REAL JOB. It is very involved, requires knowledge of real estate law, sales skills, and lots and lots of hours. I did it for 10 years. This is a tough market to start in. Plan on no money for at least 6 months, it's strictly commission. And if you are not willing to put in the time to become properly trained, do yourself a favor and find another line of work.

My son tried it when he graduated from college but hated the long hours and the 100% commission (like, no regular paycheck and no guaranteed income). The housing market is slow right now. DianeV knows what she's taking about. Try out her idea of working as an administrative assistant or phone girl at a real estate office. Job-shadow one of the agents when you have a chance.

You need to be a Realtor to sell real estate and yes to be a broker instead of an agent you need to apprentice for at least a year in most states. You have other options that in my opinion are much better, I've been in the business over a decade and don't mind giving you some ideas or even some options.
