    Vaginal scan at 20 weeks
    Hi,

I have always heard that a vaginal scan is necessary only during early pregnancy or when there is something to worry... yesterday I had my 20 weeks ultrasound and after the abdominal scan the sonographer also performed the vaginal scan. When I asked her if this is normal procedure or is it done because there's something worry, she told me that it's only a normal procedure that they follow and this was to make sure that my cervix has enough passage way for me to deliver the baby. After the exam she said that it's normal. Well, my little girl was very active and it was very difficult for them to take pictures :) Could it be because of this, that they chose to do a vaginal scan for me? Or could it be because I have post-placenta?Has anyone had this at 20 weeks as part of their regular ultrasound visit? Please help me out of this great confusion.. thanks a lot beforehand...

Though the vaginal scans are done typically in the early months of pregnancy to determine age, etc of the fetus, I have heard of a few places that do the vaginal scans up to 20 weeks, as a way to double check things, anything they may have missed with the abdominal ultrasound. It sounds like everything is just fine, BUT if you are concerned about it, definitely speak to your doctor about it.

Oh, and I missed the part about the post placenta. That could be a big part of why they did the vaginal scan. I don't know much about post placenta, and its definitely something you want to discuss with your doctor. I THINK that it has something to do with an increased chance of bleeding, and an increased possibility for c-section. BUT as I said, you definitely want to discuss it with your doctor... I just don't know much about it, and there's not a lot of research that I can find on it.
