My question is : is there a special/specific type of wax ring that should be used with an offset flange.

I have installed many toilets over the years and this is the first time I have ever seen an offset flange. When I took the old toilet off the wax ring wax not properly lined up with the flange opening. I want to make sure that nothing can leak as I have brand new floors that I don't want to ruin.

Hi Jandh.

NOPE.. no special wax gasket. Just purchase a wax gasket with a horn and regular wax gasket (without horn)... should be good to go.

Wax gasket with horn is in picture below. When viewed from the side the horn sticks down a bit... helps keep it lined up to toilet flange better than regular one. Speed ball's post below is correct in that some of the horn can intefere with setting the wax gasket... Here, I take a set of avaiation snips and trimm back some of the horn if needed... That is why you want to "dry fit" the gasket gently down onto the flange and see how it fits... if you feel any resistance you may need to trim some of the horn off.

To install, I set the wax gasket in position on the flange and almost always notice a void spot where I have had to FILL IN VOID with extra wax (from regular wax gasket)... Then I set wax gasket with horn on toilet bowl base and set toilet. Ballengerb1's post below is also right in that not all offset flanges require a VOID area to be filled
With wax... but a couple do... so if yours does not.. cool... Just check the fit of gasket to toilet flange first.

Try the wax ring on flange first.. look under, on top.. around edges, see if you see a void (light) between wax and the offset flange.. see what you think from there.

I know the horned gasket sounds like a bit more work... but I still think a homeowner will have less trouble squeezing that over and off flange than a regular gasket.

Point again... no sprecial gaskets needed... use a wax gasket with horn (may need to trim) OR a regular wax gasket. Up to you!

Has anybody asked how much of a offset the flange has? If it has too much of a offset fitting the funnel might have a tough time lining up with the opening. As Growler would say, "Just my two pence". Regards, Tom

MASS, what's causing your void area,I've never had this issue. The only offsets I have ever seen or used moved you over 1.5".

Jandh2, how do you know or think you will have voids? We are waiting for MASS to answer that question on his post. I have never had a void when setting an offset flange.

Hey Bob... I know what you are asking about... I am not exactly sure I know what I meant by "void"... so hard sometimes to explain what you want to in only so many words... but here, I guess I was picturing an old 4" cast iron type offset flange where the pipe is set too low in the flange and the wax gasket practically falls in when the toilet gets set.. so was kind of telling Heather to set the wax gasket and look to see if any void areas that need to be filled with wax so gasket won't fall into drain.

I try to cover all bases when answering these questions and all I kept seeing in my head was the troublesome older type flanges that were not set/calked properly and all the wax I had to use to build up so gaskets would not fall in.
