    Loud Squeal When Flushing Toilet
When we flush our downstairs toilet, there is a loud "squeal" like a siren that sounds as the water is replenished into the tank. Any ideas what this might be and how I can fix it?

Did this sound just start happening, or has it been slowly increasing? My guess would be that it is a worn or damaged fill valve. It could also be a failure of the shut-off valve that is below the toilet, because of a missing or damaged washer or seat.

My advice is to take the top of the tank off, put your finger on the outer rim of the flush valve, and flush. As the tank fills, you should feel the vibration of the valve squealing. If this is where the sound is coming from, replace the valve. You could also rebuild it, but it's considerably easier to buy a new one than find the right part and rebuild it yourself.

Once you have bought the new valve, turn the water off to the toilet, flush, sponge out the remaining water, disconnect the water supply from the bottom of the fill valve, remove it, and replace it with the new valve. By the way, if, after you shut-off the water and then flush, the tank still refills (however slow), your shut-off valve is also bad and in need of replacement.

They shouldn't allow people on crack like jonjon9 to use the internet. What the heck is he talking about in the message above? My dalmatian could formulate a sentence that made more sense and he isn't smart enough to hump the other male dog from the correct end. Stop the madness. I will try the toilet fix in spite of jonjon9's dillusional ramblings.
