    How To Determine Toilet Rough-In
    We are sprucing up a half bath. The toilet was squeezed in when we took it out... tank pressing against the wall. Now that we've added tile to the wall it will not fit.

    The toilet rough-in measures 11" as it stands now. We feel that a 10" rough in toilet would solve the problem, but before we go out and buy a new toilet we want to be certain that the toilet we have isn't a 10". Since it was already a tight fit, we suspect it's a 12", but how can we tell for sure?

    The rough in figure is the distance from the finished wall behind the toilet to the center of the drain pipe. There is an adjustable flange that will give you 2" each direction from the drain.

    Hi Cparker.

    Frankly, if you cannot put your old toilet in now.. then definitely not a 10" rough toilet... but if you want to be sure...

    Put the old toilet up against a wall... square and level... then measure from that wall to the center of the bolt holes in base of bowl. Any measure between 11 and 13 would suggest that it is a 12 inch rough toilet to me.

    Now, you have an 11" measure from finish wall to center of toilet flange, so a 10" rough toilet will work perfectly. That should do it for you.
