Can I convert a shower drain into a toilet drain?
We are buying a house, and love the entire layout except for the master bath. There is ample room in the bathroom, but the configuration does not make good use of the space. Currently there is an extremely long vanity area and a large toilet area on one wall, and a tiny 3 ft by 3 ft shower on the opposite wall between his and her closets. We want to keep the separate closets. What we would like to do is move the toilet to the shower area, shorten the vanity and make a large tub/shower combo where the vanity and toilet is currently. We will be working with a slab foundation, and will be hiring a professional plumber, but we want to get an idea if our plan will even work. Can a shower drain be converted into a toilet drain, and vice versa?

Shower drain into toilet drain: No
Toilet drain into shower drain: Yes

Shower has 2" drain while toilet requires 3" drain. You will have to cut the slab and relocate existing toilet inlet to new location.

Shower drain can be easily converted into shower drain. We have even installed 3" ABS drains in large showers on several occasions. In this case you would just install 3" trap and head.

Milo, In our area all toilet branches are 4" under the slab. We're allowed to drop to three on a second floor instalation. Regards, Tom,
