Bathtub water leaking through kitchen light fixture
I had a bath like an hour ago. And when I went downstairs into the kitchen I turned on the light and I heard this weird noise. And then I saw all the water on the kitchen floor. The ceiling light was full of water. What should we do right now? My boyfriend is going away until Monday morning. Am I save? I don't really like the fact of water touching electrical in this house. PLEASE HELP! Thank you,
    Nora

    Hi Nora...

The first thing to do here will be to shut off the power to the kitchen or even the entire house if the kitchen/kitchen lights are not clearly labelled at the fuse/breaker panel and remove the light cover so you can empty the water from it. WAIT FOR THE WATER TOCOOL IF THE LIGHT BULB GOT IT HOT. Do not put it back on and let things dry out for an hour or so before turning the power back on, OK?

After the power is back on you'll be fine until your BF returns on Monday as long as you don't use that bathtub... promise!

When your BF returns you will need to test for the leak and where it is coming from in a very specific manner. Here, the first thing to test will be the drain pipe... take a 5 gallon bucket filled with water and pour it into the tub... do it a couple times and wait a half-hour and see if any water shows up downstairs. If water shows up downstairs then there is a leak at the drain pipes/tub waste and that will need to be repaired.

If the tub didn't leak when you did the bucket test then you will now run water from the TUB SPOUT ONLY to fill the tub to the overflow pipe. If water shows up downstairs while filling the tub then the issue is at the tub/shower valve at the tub spout piping, right? If the tub leaks when water hits the tub overflow (or shortly thereafter) then the issue will most likely be at the tub overflow assembly (usually accessible at a tub access panel).

If this still doesn't reveal the leaker you then run the shower for awhile and see if that makes the leak show up...

Get it? Test one thing at a time and when you determine if it is the drain pipe or the water piping you can start to isolate and get the issue fixed.

Have any more questions just let me know, OK?

THANK YOU FOR YOU ANSWERE! My boyfriend is gone and he said it will be fine until he gets back :-O we have two showers upstairs can I still use the other shower? I am scared the power goes into the water everywhere. Is it really just affecting the one shower upstairs or are all the pipes connected to each other? So if I would use the sink or the other shower would they leak as well now? A friend of mine is a plumber and he is going to come by hopefully soon. Is a plumber dealing with these kind of issues or is it an electrician? Should he even touch anything until we get a hold of the builder because of warranty? Sorry for all the questions, I really appreciate the help! I would love to do the things you told me but if I mess something up my boyfriend will freak on me! Is the ceiling messed up now? I am sure it is full of water up there now! :-O

    THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

You should still be able to use the other shower.

This should only be affecting the one shower (most likely here).

All other fixtures should be OK.

If home is under warranty then have your plumber friend shut the power off and pull the light down and drain off water. Then have the plumber perform the tests I recommended (in the order recommended) and then once you have an idea of the problem contact the warranty company, OK?

The ceiling is probably going to stain a little, but when it dries it can be fixed with stainkill paint or similar (or if under warranty, sealed and then repainted).

    Good luck!
