I have Windows 7 and I'm looking for the same setting. My fingers are not long enough to reach the FN key and the F11/F12 keys with one hand - which is how my notebook's volume up/down function keys are. I don't like having to use both hands to change the volume, it's very inconvenient.

I know about the mobility center, but I would like to create a one-key-shortcut (or at least one I can activate with one hand) to switch between function and multimedia instead of having to use my mouse to get there.

I would guess that the functions in the mobility center are just some kind of links. I'm sure that for every function there must be another way to get those results.

So where would I find where the functions are linked to? Where is the original place that setting can be changed? It must be there somewhere.

More often than not the setting is in the bios of your system when talking about the function key. I would avoid that though and look at other options that can handle it. I have the same issue with an older Dell laptop I own and use a program called 3RVX to handle my sound on that machine. There are also other programs out there that will allow you to create keyboard macros. Many of those programs will allow you to assign a system options such as volume as well. Hope this helps.
I would suggest looking at 3RVX before you start delving into the world of macros. It is like a little slice of heaven compared to the way Windows handles user interaction with sound.

Try clicking on the volume icon then you can use the up/down arrow keys to adjust the volume.
There's always a way round OEM keys..
