Yes dial tone but no ring on phone
We have a dial tone but when we call or receive a call. We get a half a ring and then nothing. Verizon checked their end and said that we have a short . How do we find this short ourselves.

Sounds like one or more of your jacks or line cords is corroded, see that the contacts are gold on jacks and cords.

First try to remove the short. The easiest way to do this is to disconnect all phones from there connectors. Then place one phone at a time back on its connector and call it. Continue the process until the phones are either working or you found the failing connector.

If you have inside wiring service with Verizon, tell them to get there butts out to your phone and fix it, that's what the contract is for .

Water, cob webs. Believe it or not.

First do the NID test. Insert good phone in the NID test jack outside. Verify stuff works.

Put jumper back in NID. Unplug half the phones. Test. Then the other half. Keep binary searching until you've found the phone. Might not be any.

Now, you have to start disconnecting wiring in the same systematic fashion to isolate the segment.

Then remove outlet plates and inspect on the bad segment.

    Low phone outets are suspect.

I believe it may not be a short, if shorted, it will ring busy.
If you call your number, does it ring busy, or ring and ring?

It's hard to tell the difference between a shunt (wet cobwebs) and high resistance.

A short or open would be easy. No ring at all. No dial tone.

Kiss, I may have misswritten, If he calls his phone with someone else's, and it rings and rings, it is open, or high resistance, if he calls his number and it rings busy, it is shorted.

OPEN = no connection, so it would ring as observed by the calling phone. It would not ring in the house.

A shunt or high resistant path or loose wire can do weird things.
It may ring in the house, but have static when it's answered. It could ring intermittantly in the house, but won't work when you pick up a phone. Dial tone, may or may not be present.
Sometimes the ring clears the shunt for a short time until the insect rebulds the nest.

    Don't forget water logged cables..

Can you take a pic of the inside of the box outside?

Hey Kiss, you're right, should check at D Mark to determine if the problem is even in the House.
We are surrounded by salt air and almost 100% is coroded jacks/line cord.

I'm asking about the dmark because the OP may not know you have to remove a cover or unplug a jumper.

I don't have a butt set, nor those funky butt set adapters, but I do have a modular jack connected to alligator clips.
