Applying is the only way of knowing who will hire a peron - I don't see that being a sex offender is a problem. Drinking, drugs - yes, a problem.

I see this question everywhere and have asked it myself many times. There is no "yes or no" answer and here is why: Every company has its own policies regarding hiring felons and/or sex offenders. Many if them do not and it isn't the companies' fault. My of them require you to occasionally haul hazardous materials. Therefore you must apply for a hazmat/tanker endorsement which is approved by USDOT via Homeland Security. Also, many of the insurance carriers refuse to cover sex offenders because they fear we will commit a crime while on the road. One thing you can do is get bonded via your Dept of Labor and/or the federal gov. The fed bonding program is a start but is only good for 6 months. There are other factors such as registration requirements of other states. I have heard (but not able to verify yet) that some states want you to register with them just to pass through or drop & hook a load. One person even said there was 1 or 2 states that required you to put a placard on the outside of the rig door that said "sex offender." Again, I haven't verified this. Many companies also require that you haul into Canada. As a sex offender you might be able to but it requires that you get a "Minister's Permit" from the Canadian gov't which takes time and is not guaranteed to be approved. The short answer is yes, but there are many obstacles that you will need to overcome first. Also, many companies pick up/drop loads to air and sea terminals. This requires a TWIC, a federal identification card. The disqualifying charges do not mention sex offenses but I've heard of people being turned down for it. I currently have an application in for one but haven't heard anything. If you can't get a TWIC you will not get a hazmat. So far my experience in finding a class A trucking job has been the same as trying to hit a dime at 150 yards with a BB gun in 50mph winds. Not impossible, but it requires a great deal of skill and trickery (not to be confused with lying). Never... ever lie on your apps. Trucking companies view a lie as if you personally blew up every rig they own. They despise it! I have looked at my state's sex offender registry to see if anyone has a current job with a trucking company. So far I found 2. One I must tell you guys, appearance means everything to them. You will deal with their customers. I see countless offenders on the registry who, quite frankly, look like they are a sex offender. If you are one of them you need to clean up. First of all, SHAVE!! Beards don't go over well. Cut your hair if its long. For god sakes bathe!! Next, for you people who don't have a good grip on the English language you need to speak well. Drop the "yo's" and the "yeah's" and the "dude's." It will not impress the recruiters. If you are lucky enough to get an interview dress appropriately. No headwear! I know truckers often wear t-shirts and jeans but you aren't one yet. Dress for success! Shirt, tie, nice pants, and no heavy jewelry. You aren't casting for a rap video, its an interview. Dress as such. If you were offended by that then I'd say you have no chance of getting hired. I'm trying to help. People have a habit of prejudging us so don't give them the chance to say, "Yup, he was exactly what I was expecting to be." Be professional! Now, there are some new laws going into effect in some states, and other states are talking about doing it. There's a new law called "ban the box." That refers to the felony box we all hate to say yes to. They are changing the law so that companies can't ask the question on the first application and the first interview. This is so that we have a chance to get to an interview. That's your chance to 'wow!' the recruiter. Many of us have some great skills but we rarely ever get the chance to display those skills to a company because of that box. Our app usually goes right into the trash can when we leave. They can still do a background check on you but only after they interview you. If they happen to make the mistake of telling you you have the job they can't do the background check at all. They take what they just hired. But if you are one of 5 others they are considering for hire they still can do it. That's why I say do not lie if they ask. If they do ask, tell them your charge(s) in a positive way. Let them know you made a dumb mistake and that you will never do that again. And don't!! What too many companies don't realize is, we are so desperate for a job that we are willing to work harder than most other people. We are willing to work a bit cheaper, at least I am. If their insurance is going to go up because of me I'm willing to take .20 cpm to start rather than the usual .35 cpm that most offer. Tell them that! If they go for it, don't complain at work about that pay. You accepted it! We are considered scourge of the earth these days so we need to make certain concessions to get our foot in the door. Once you are there don't screw it up. Stay off your cell phone until you are off duty. Most trucks have a company phone number on them with an ID number for other people to call if they see us doing something bad or illegal. Motorists can see you in your side mirror so stay off the phone. That call isn't worth your job that you tried so hard to get. Don't think that once you are hired you are in for good. Most companies are getting 3,000 applications per week. They can and will replace you in a second! I hope this helps. If you put in 20 applications so far, put in 40 more. If a few months have passed by since you applied to that company that claimed to hire felons and they didn't call you, apply again. Show them you really want that job. I've heard some managers say that the felons they hired were better workers than 5 other people they hired that had clean records. Be that person! If they make you do things that you feel are unfair, do it with a smile. At least you have a job! It may take 6 months or 6 years but eventually someone important will recognize your hard work. The further you get away from your felony the better off you are. I worked for one construction company who had reservations about hiring me. 3 months later my boss gave me a raise and said he actually was so impressed with my work ethic that he had forgotten about my criminal record. You need to be that person. As one song says, "Don't stop thinking about tomorrow!" Plan out your future instead of flying by the seat of your pants. I get by day by day, but I never stop trying to improve myself for what tomorrow may bring.

I am an r.s.o and yes you can get a t.w.i.c and hazmat providing you don't have any of the other charges that are listed on the t.s.a's web site. As far as companies, you just need to call and check around.
