Generally no. Not unless you work on a farm or with your parents.

Child labor laws make it extremely difficult for anyone under 16 as do insurance requirements, and legal liabilities, and the average ability of anyone that age. But mostly a total lack of work experience. You will have to learn everything they might ask for you to do.

Now if someone has the choice between an 18 year old (or someone older and experienced) and a 14 year old... particularly in this bad economy, they are going to hire the experienced older person for the same pay. More value for their money.

So there is a huge difference between CAN you legally work and CAN you actually find anyone willing to hire you. Most jobs are never advertised, either in a newspaper or online. If they can fill them without making the effort and expense, they are not going to spend the money. And you would be defining what entry level is... basically no work skills or experience that would be of value to an employer. And that's something all people will deal with in the beginning.

Of course, there are always jobs that can be done for neighbors, relatives, friends' parents -- yard work, light housework, mother's helper entertaining small children so Mom can be freer at home, local newspaper delivery, washing lawn furniture, trimming bushes (after instruction), ironing, folding clean clothes, being a gofer for an elderly home-bound or even bed-bound neighbor, etc.

Always make sure your parents know whom you are working for and where you are (and for how long).

And a good point... I was just assuming a regular job. Having been in the workforce for over 30 years does that.

The unconventional jobs mentioned by Wondergirl, you stand a far better chance of getting. And if you do a good enough job, you might get asked to do it on a regular basis. Like yard work.

I had an Elderly lady I used to do all the yard work for once a week when I was in college... and I had received that offer via a mutual friend. I did a good job, at a very fair price, and was very honest and respectful to her, as a result I got regular work (weekly during the spring summer and early fall) which helped pay some of my transportation bills when I was in College.
