If you recently installed Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player, or other software, reboot the machine. If the message persists, uninstall IE7/WMP/other software, reinstall, and reboot before attempting to use.

If the above doesn't work, post back.

I too have started to get this message when I click on links within web pages. It even comes up when I hit the Home button or the back button in IE. I'm currently using IE6 and can't upgrade to any other version as this message comes up when I hit the download button?

I have recently run the windows XP repair tool and have started getting these problems since then if this helps?
I'm a total novice but can follow instructions to any help is appreciated.

Eek! There may be a wipe and full reinstall in your future, but try any or all of the following first:
    • Reapply service packs up to the desired level.

    • Uninstall IE6, if possible, using Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components. Then, reinstall desired browser - may need another computer or a trip to the library to obtain the installation package.

    • Run the Spuninst.exe program that is in the IE7 folder (following excerpted from MSDN Forums):
...use the uninstaller file that is available in the IE7 folder to uninstall Internet Explorer 7. To do this, follow these steps:

      1. Click Start, click Run, type %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe, and then click OK.Note In this command, %windir% points to the Drive:\Windows folder. The placeholder Drive represents the hard disk partition that contains the Windows operating system files. By default, the IE7 folder is a hidden folder. Therefore, you may have to make this folder visible. To do this, follow these steps:
      2. Open Windows Explorer.
      3. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
      4. Click the View tab.
      5. In the Advanced settings list, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
      6. Follow the wizard instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 7.
      7. After you uninstall Internet Explorer 7, double-click the Internet Explorer icon to verify that Internet Explorer 6 is restored.”

WARNING! USE THIS AT YOUR OWN PERIL. AND I WOULD MAKE A RESTORE POINT FIRST

    Hi all,
Thank you all for your help but I sorted the problem!

As I had a few issues popping up, I found all the tutorials were directing me to fix something in IE. I was running IE6 and could only find reference to this issue in IE7?

Anyway, the steps I took are as follows:
I ran a repair for IE6 using the guide from here; Repair Internet Explorer 6

That didn't seem to do anything (but you never know?) so I managed to get a copy of Firefox onto the machine and downloaded an IE7 fix update from Microsoft.

Then I installed IE7, which wouldn't even start up?

Then I installed IE8 and now it all works OK!? The links in Outlook 2003 all work as they should and there's no more problems.

NOTE: IE8 refused to install on my machine before this due to updates not being installed as it couldn't launch my default browser?

I'm certainly no expert but just thought to update everything I could and it seems to have worked. Might help someone else in this situation.

Again, thanks for your help but no system wipe here!
