Self Car accident, Pay out of pocket vs. File insurance claim?
My son hit a tree trying to avoid a dog in the street.
Thank goodness he and no one else was hurt.
Situation: car and insurance is under my name.
Should I file a claim with the insurance company let them handle it or pay out of pocket to repair the car? (1995 acura intergra, btw)
Damages look pretty significant, most likely be over my deductible.
A quick glance, damages appear to be broken radiator, oil leak (maybe oil pan) front bumper, left headlights, front left fender, engine hood, driver side door doesn't close (assuming the worst, frame damage)
1st concern is the airbags had deployed, so I am assuming it will be considered salvage and won't be worth repairing.
2nd concern, I can't afford either the cost of repairs or increased premiums.
Any constructive advice is appreciated, thanks.

Don't know about other states but in NY if u had an accident and it is recorded with police, the DMV is notified. Insurance company has right to raise cost. Whether u put in a claim or not it is going to cost u when u renew.

    This is from experience.

That's what you pay insurance for.

I suggest you get an estimate, then call your insurance company and ask what the impact would be on your rates if you were to file a claim. My insurance company has always been quite open about it (I've made this same call 2 times in my driving career). But first, to be clear - is your son named on your insurace policy?

Well first is the car paid for ? Or do you owe on it,

If you owe on it, you have to keep making the payments, if it is paid for, one option is of course, just having it hauled away as junk and get another car.

Is your son listed as a driver on your insurance ?

Next get a estimate for the repair, then you will know where you stand
