Well, I would suggest using HDMI cable, it easier and better image. But.. anyway
The back of the DVR should have the LR & RGB (left and right audio, and the Red, Blue, Green cable hookups, like this:

The back of your TV should look similar to this:

Note the upper left... you are looking for the COMPONENT VIDEO INPUT.
Make sure you match the correct red cable... one is for Audio (which should be connected with the white one) the other should be with the other 2 video cables.
Or take the easy way...
HDMI hookup

Go to My Cable Mart - here I even picked one out. 6.6 certified HDMI 1.3

Hi I have my dvr box hooked up to my TV with an hdmi cable now if I wanted to hook up a dvd player do I hook that up to the back of the TV with a hdmi cable or do I hook up the dvd player to the back of the dvr box with a hdmi cable ?
There is no HDMI input on your cable box (in all likelihood). If your DVD Player has HDMI out, then the best connection would be to run out from the DVD player in to the TV.
Not all DVD Players have HDMI connections though. So the next best is most likely component video (red, green, blue RCA for video, and white and red RCA for audio).
