Blower/Air Handler motor noise. Loud humming.
We have ~ 1991 Carrier 58sx high efficiency condensing furnace and central AC. Now the air handler is making a loud humming/vibration noise when the fan kicks in (the blower motor for the air handler makes the noise, not the gas furnace/exhaust blower). The serious electrical humm is loudest when the motor is just cranking up, but remains pretty loud now when it's blowing at full rpm (vibrating noise too), making it hard to sleep at night (Utility closet is in the bedroom). What is the most likely reason the motor is now making so much noise -- when it seemed to be very quiet just a coupe of years ago? Bad motor? Bearings in the air handler (squirrel cage)? Needs a new motor? Suggestions? Thank you!

Could be dirt on the blower wheel that is attached to the blower motor. Could be bad capacitor on the motor. Could be bad motor.

Thanks for your help! I like the sequence of your suggestions too -- simple and easiest/least expensive solutions are first! Looks like the pan may have been leaking at one time before we moved in, so I may find clumps of dust attached to the wheel. Probably worth changing the capcitor while I'm in there as well...

My furnace blower recently started making a loud, low, steady train like noise every time it comes on. It is not a higher pitched squeek, but more like an engine. It is moving air and the cage is spinning. My furnace is supposed to be a perm lubricated motor. Help! I have the blower motor...

Ceiling fan with light kit on separate switches [ 1 Answers ]

I have recently replaced a ceiling fan with light kit with a newer model. I hooked up the wires from the new fan/light to the same wires in the ceiling box that the old fan was hooked up to. There are two switches on the wall plate, one for the light and one for the fan. When I hooked up the new...

A/C Loud Buzzing - Blower Motor won't turn on [ 2 Answers ]

My air handler is making a loud buzzing noise when it attempts to engage. The blower motor will not turn on, although the motor and attached "squirrel cage" appears to turn okay, so I'm guessing the bearings are okay. Is this a capacitor problem, or am I likely to need a new compressor? The unit...

The motor in one of my 35-year old Trane air handlers recently Blew. It looked quite old. I figured it would be easy to replace It just by matching the specs. Unfortunately the new Motor runs for 10-15 minutes, then it stops for 15 minutes, Then it starts again. I suspect the thermal...
