Hi, I am new to this site, but my problem is that I came back from vacation and the air conditioner was not working. I have central air and it is a Bryant Air conditioner. It is about 18 years old. I went out to look at the air conditioner, the line from the air conditioner had a ball of ice covering it, and the line into the house, where the black rubber coating was missing, was covered in ice. I tried turing on the fan, and putting it on, on all the time, nothing was happening. I could hear fluid or something running through the ac line by the furnace, but nothing happing at the furnace. I have a high efficiency furnace, train xl90... does it sound like the ac is fine, but there is problems at the furnace? Why is the line freezing up... any help would be greatly appreciated.. thank you.

Is the inside fan running? Turn it by hand and see if it starts up. If it doesn't, shutr power off and turn by hand. Does it turn freely or does it turn rough with resistance? Is your filter clean?

No the inside fan was not running. I'll check it tonight and see if it turns freely or not, but what is causing the line outside to freeze up where I have chucks of ice on the line and around the connection into the compressor?

It is freezing up because of "lack of air flow" If the inside fan is not running inside and the unit out is you have a lack of air flow. Let's get the inside unit going and you will be cool. You will need to shut the power off to thaw the unit out before you will operate properly.

You could also have it set too low, remember it's using a compressed cold fluid to make the air cold. If the unit itself gets too cold the humidity from outside will start freezing to it. Leave the temperature at a comfortable setting and insulate and air leaks so the unit doesn't have to run non-stop.

I checked out the furnace, I turned on the heat, and burners came in, but fan and blower didn't start up, so furnace turned off after about 2 min. so it appears to be something with the fan, possibly the motor. Is there any definitive way to check to see why the fan isn't working? How can I check the relay, or can't I? Someone suggested the circuit board could be bad, but is there anyway to check that myself. I do have a volt meter but I have limited knowledge on how to use it. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Take care of your motor problem first. Does it turn freely? Will it start with a push?
