Why does hair dye always go red on me? My hair was med ash brown with a lot of gray so tried to dye it. I used Loreal Preference Dark ash blonde and now it is light redish brown. I don't like it and my eyebrows are grayish brown so everything looks wrong -my skin color and the clothes I wear are all wrong for the color of my hair now. I hate it! What can I do?

Hair naturally has red, orange, and gold undertones. If you use a color that is the same level or lighter as your natural color, you run the risk of pulling those undertones out. Coloring your hair at home without being educated about the fundamentals of hair and hair color can have damaging effects. Either stay at the level of your natural hair, go slightly darker, or consult a professional hairstylist to help you pick the right color for you. Especially since you have a lot of gray... stick to professional color. At least the first time, so you can learn the best way to handle your hair.
