Home improvement grant for a disabled individual
Need to know if there are grants available to disabled individuals to remodel the home such as interior painting, taking off paneling and replacing it so it can be painted, putting in a bathroom vanity, new kitchen floor, remodeling kitchen cabinets, putting in new carpet and finishing a garage that has been enclosed to make for another room. The house is over 50 years old. The individual is on SSDI, SSI, as well as AD. It also needs to be painted outside as well. If there are grant available, would be interested in knowing which are not "scams." Have read that about 90% are scams and do not want to become involved with them should they be.
    Thanks for your help.

First almost all real grants come directly from a government agency.

If you have to pay anything to apply for a grant, then it is not real.

BUT>>> there are professional grant writers, most large corp use them to apply for grants for research and the such.

If they are a veteran, often the VET can get money from the VA to change door ways, bathrooms and the such to make it useable by a handicap person.

There are funds in the city and county non profit groups for some updating of elderly homes.

But in general, what you are asking for is more than is done for most homes by any agency. Some may help with some outside paint, some may pay for a broken window, But you are not going to get a room added, you are not going to get new carpet, new cabinets, and only floors if your feet are falling though it.

Sadly for most poor, they just live with what they have, the best they can.

You can contact your local Community Action Agency and see what help they can give. They do have some programs for some of things you have stated. Perhaps they can give you information on the rest.

You could do a video of the home and send it to "Extreme Home Makeover" with a letter, etc. Or any of the other home makeover shows - there seem to be many of them now.

Have you thought of Habitat For Humanity? I know they build new homes but it almost sounds like this friend of yours could stand a new home.

You could enlist other concerned people, such as yourself, and see about doing a community project for this person. Do some publicity, garner donations, etc.

Talk to your Congressional delegation and ask if they know of some grant that will help renovate this house. What is there to lose by asking?

    Good luck to you.
