Ask Me Help Desk FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

Search for Answers and Information; Membership is not required

You do not need to be a registered member to search the hundreds of thousands of answers at Ask Me Help Desk.  All content is available to guests for searching and reading.

Site Search:

At the top of every page is our search box and Advanced search link.

  • Basic Search:
    Enter keywords or a term (in quotes) in the search box then click the Search button.
  • Advanced Search:
    Click the advanced link, next to the search button. From there you may search for keywords or a term by user, whether the text is in the subject line or the body of the post, by date, by topic, or a combination of any of those options.

Category and Topic Search:

Ask Me Help Desk is arranged by categories (topics) and subtopics. Clicking on our logo or the Ask link, at the top of any page, will bring you to the list.

Clicking on a Category (Arts & Leisure, Business & Careers, etc.) will show you the list of subtopics in that category. You may search the category by clicking the Search this Topic link in the upper right of the page to search that particular category.

Clicking on the subtopic of a category will show you the list of questions that have been asked in that subtopic. Clicking on any of them will show you the full question and the answers that have been given.  Alternatively, you can click the Search this Topic link in the upper right to search that particular subtopic.

Can my questions and answers be edited?

Yes, they can.

Our Content Managers and Moderators edit question titles, questions and answers for spelling, grammar, uniqueness, and clarity. They will also move questions which were placed in the wrong category and perform other moderation tasks, as needed.

Register to Ask or Answer questions, and use other forum features

To ask or answer questions, and use other forum features, you must register.

To register, click on the button near the top of any page. Fill in the fields on the registration form, check the box to affirm agreement to the Terms of Service and Rules, then click the "Sign Up" button at the bottom of the page.

You will be redirected to a page confirming you are registered.  At that point you can proceed to ask or answer questions, and use many other forum features.

How and Where to Ask a Question

Questions should be asked in the appropriate Topic. Familiarize yourself with our homepage and you'll see that the Topics are arranged under Categories, such as Arts & Leisure, Business & Careers, etc.

  1. To ask a question, for example, about Plumbing:
  2. See the Category called Home and Garden.
  3. Under that category you will see "Plumbing".
  4. Click on Plumbing.
  5. Click on the button in the upper left: to be taken to the posting page.
  6. Enter a meaningful, specific title, compose your question in the Message box then click click the "Submit New Question" button below the box.

You will be notified by email when your question is answered.

Answering Questions

All registered Members are welcome to answer questions.

When reading a question, click the  button in the upper left to open the Answer window. Type your answer then click the "Submit Answer" button below the area where you typed your answer.

You may find, and/or be notified of, questions to answer in a variety of ways:

1. Browse Unanswered Questions: 

At the bottom of all pages of the site is a link to recent Unanswered Questions. All recent questions, in any Topic, that have not been answered are shown at this link.

2. Browse the most recent Questions and Answers:

The Answer link at the top of all pages will take you to Questions that have been asked in the past 24 hours, as well as questions that have received answers in the same period.

3. Subscribe to a topic or topics:

See here for how to be notified whenever a question is asked in a topic of your interest. You may subscribe to as many topics as you wish.

4. Browse topics:

Click on a topic to see all questions in that topic.

Search FAQ

Select this option if you would like your search to look in the text of FAQ items as well as their titles.

Select an option here to specify how you would like your search query to be treated. 'Any words' will return the most numerous but possibly least relevant results, while 'Complete phrase' will return only results that contain exactly what you are searching for.
