How do I prove that I don't drink alcohol when test results are positive?
I have had 2 hair strand tests which have both come back showing positive FAEE results yet I don't drink.. at all!! Why?
I have not had an alcoholic drink or ingested any food with alcohol in it for over 2 years as I have pancreatitis and cannot drink without becoming very ill. The tests went back to detect alcohol consumption in the last 6 months and the results show that I abuse alcohol on a daily basis. This is totally wrong and untrue but I have no idea how to prove it. I also had 2 EtG tests done at the same time which both came back negative. I would appreciate any help as this involves my children.

There might be an argument depending on what the test is based in. Any products that are used that have alcohol in them can be absorbed by the hair as well as the skin. Do you have a lawyer with you on this one? Areosol sprays can contain isoproponol which is distilled alcohol that has added contaminates in it. Cologn or perfume may also contain it. Even some shaving creams. Check your labels.

I do have a solicitor who is completely baffled and at the last hearing the judge called me a liar. I use perfume and shampoo but the testers say that this is all taken into account and that would not lead to a positive result. As a result I am now only allowed supervised contact with my son. I just need to prove it is a false positive but don't know how.

Did your solicitor recommend independent testing? It wouldn't be the first time a mix up happened. Also keep a diary of all the foods your eating.

You should also go see your doctor. There are disorders that make it look like you have alcohol in your system (such as diabetes w/ a urine test) but really, you're not drinking, your body's chemistry is just wack. If you really are sober, get ahold of your doctor because this could be a sign of something going on with your body, and keep track of your chart and records, along w/ copies, for the court.

Sorry, but diabetes will not cause you to test positive for alcohol.

The Court will read a Physician's statement. It will not review charts and records.

When a diabetic has an incredibly high blood sugar, the sugars can leak into their urine. If there is yeast in the urine, the yeast will ferment the sugars into alcohol, causing a false positive.

My husband died of the side effects of diabetes. I could write a book on the side effects of diabetes and end stage renal disease and sugar-induced comas and the like. Maybe not everyone carries a card identifying himself/herself as diabetic. My husband did - and not for this reason.

Please don't quote another Q and A site as a reference. That "expert" is no more credible that any other person posting.

If you post a site that gives this same info I'm more than happy to read it and learn something. To the best of my knowledge the blood sugar would have to place a patient in a coma in order for that patient to test positive for intoxication.

But, again - happy to learn if you have info from a reputable source to the contrary. I think the person would very obviously be sick and not drunk. But, again, happy to learn. I gave more than one insulin injection on the side of the road. Keep in mind that we are talking about a hair follicle test.

Look for the question: What about urine alcohol produced by fermentation?

And I have plenty of family members with diabetes, ones who are dying of diabetes as well, and that does not make me an expert on this illness.

You have "plenty" of family members with diabetes? I had my hands full with one. Sorry some are dying of diabetes. Is dialysis the problem, the "killer" (so to speak)?

I am going to ask DrBill to chime in here. He's the expert. Also, keep in mind we are talking about hair follicle testing, not urine.

To OP - it's helpful if all of your posts contain the same info. Conflicting info confuses everyone.

Hello. I would like to write a comment to the OP. I, too, have been going through this for over 2 years now. They pulled my licence ( very, very, utterly long story!! ) and I do not drink at all. Monthly, my doctor has been sending me for urine, drug testing and alcohol testing. I am on a methadone maintenance program as well. I explained to my doc that I do Not drink!! I feel that he feels that I am lying to him. Well, I know all too well the prejudices that come along with being addicted to painkillers. The doctor sent me to a Specialist for being overweight. He suspected diabetes and put me on Metformin. I am praying this helps because I am getting sick and tired of running around trying to prove I don't drink!! Best of luck to you all! And to the person ( Expert ) who thinks Diabetes does not cause you to test positive for alcohol? I can tell you from experience that it does. Trust me. Over 30 blood tests later and this is still going on.

The question was about a hair follicle test - your HAIR tests positive for alcohol due to your Diabetes?

I didn't - if I'm the "expert" you are referencing - address urine testing. You don't have to be diabetic to have a positive urine test particularly if the urine "sits" for a while before being tested. If you are borderline, you can test positive.

Are you saying that your alcohol blood test (plus your urine) comes back positive and you don't drink alcohol at all?

Hi Judy! Thanks for the reply! Sorry, I copied and pasted that reply by accident - I forgot to erase the text.. I apologize - I was referring to just a Urine Sample and testing positive for alcohol. The blood test was for levels of Vitamin B or something? Are you still having this issue? Have you discovered what it is? I have not had a hair follicle test. I would assume that that would test positive because it's so sensitive to everyday things in our environment. I have been told by the Specialist that it could be "fermentation" as well but how in heck do I prove that to the Ministry of Transportation?? LOL.

    RSVP

    Thanks!!

I had to make a new account, too! Grrrr.

I never had this issue - I didn't ask the question but was responding to someone else.
