Trying to obtain a Portuguese passport through a native relative.
    Hey Everyone,

I am trying to obtain a Portuguese passport through a relative. My grandmother was born in Madeira Island and I was hoping I could get one through her. If not through her, then maybe through my father. He does not have a Portuguese passport at the moment, but I figure he could get one much easier than I could and once he has one, I could get one. I have been reading that these cost thousands of dollars and in that case I would not be able to get one, but I am hoping they are much cheaper! I called the Portuguese Embassy in MA, but apparently it's a Portuguese holiday and they are closed, go figure! Anyway, thanks a bunch and hope to get some good info from you all : )

    Hello CeKuhl6363,
To obtain a Portuguese passport you must be Portuguese. Having family members (grandmother or father as it seems to be the case) won't grant you the access to the document. In fact I'm wondering if what you wish is a Passport or Nationality... You can only have Portuguese passport or nationality if you have a Portuguese birth certificate, otherwise it won't be possible. The cost can reach 200 USD or more, but that will depend in the urgency and other applicable fees, If you're portuguese and your grandmother or your father are in Portugal you'll have to write down a special document where you enable all legal permits to the person that will act in your behalf. I hope it helps though it's been a while since you posted the question! :)
