What Wire do I use for overhead outdoor use?
Hello, I have a detached garage about 150' from the main. I want to install a sub-panel in it. What kind of wire do I use to run it the same way it comes into the house (overhead). Does Home Depot sell it? I have two garages and have already run their #2 or #3 underground to it. But this one would work much better if I went overhead. The 500' spool at Home Depot look the same and claim UV and resin coating protection. Someone said I needed Simplex or Triplex. I have no idea what that is, or if Home Depot carries it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks paul

Yes the cable you want is generally called Tri-Plex, rated for aerial use. Has two black insulated wires and one bare, however this is not just a simple bare wire. It is call ACSR wire, Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced. This is the wire that an aerial rated grip clamp is used to grip and support the entire cable. Not really sure what Simplex means to this cable.

You will also need two wood screw insulators that the grips hook or loop onto.

Ii could not find the correct cable at HD or Lowe's. You may need to go to an electrical supply house, just be aware they are wholesale only and may not sell to you.

You may also need a four wire cable, depends on how the grounding of the panel will be handled. You can use 3 wire cable, but you need to drive a ground rod at the garage panel.

Here is a spec sheet on what you are looking for, just need to chose the correct size for three wire or 4 wire .

    Hope this helps
