    Puppy with recurring diarrhea
My mom has a 10.5 week old golden retriever from a reputable breeder. He is beautiful, proper weight, eats and drinks well and is basically house-trained already. Although, he does have poop accidents in his crate and occasionally next to the door due to the urgency with diarrhea. He has been to the vet twice and diagnosed with a high level of bacteria. The second time he said the diarrhea came back most likely due to over-excitement and overeating. He has diarrhea at least every 2-3 days for the past 2.5 weeks (when they got him). Last night it was liquid, all night long. My parents are older (70s) and they are up throughout the night, walking him, bathing him, washing out the crate over and over again. Honestly I'm worried about the pup and them. They are back at the vet again today. He has gone through two complete prescriptions for the bacteria and last night was their worst night yet. Any ideas?

I would say another Vet, another opinion. Something is not right.

Well, the vet says his tech missed coccidia the last time, because when he checked today it was very apparent. Pup got new meds, but threw it up. Trying it again now, if he throws up again, he is going back to vet for an injection to get him started. Luckily the puppy continues to gain weight and isn't dehydrated. But he is crying frequently because he needs to go (or thinks he does). My parents are in their 70s, but not frail! They lost their dog in November and got a new dog. They are just completely worn out after 2.5 weeks of sleepless nights.

Coccidia can be pretty easily cleared, granted you can get the meds to stay down. The vet may want to check another fecal sample in 2 - 3 weeks after treating to make sure it is gone.
Perhaps you should ask the vet about a couple of days on a bland diet, like Hills I/D or Iams Lo-Residue it may ease some of the regurgitation. And you are right, the diarrhea will make him "feel" like he has to go more often.
Your parents will have to just ride it out a couple more days hopefully, I'm glad they are spry, golden puppies can be pretty high energy, but are great pets.

Thanks for the advice LadySam. Yes, Goldens are high energy, but eager to please. My brother and I purchased several packages of doggy classes with a highly regarded trainer for them. We hope that will help with control issues, especially on the leash. My parents walk several miles a day typically, but never with an 80 lbs dog.
He ate a little food (with scrambled eggs) and got down some medicine tonight. No diarrhea for the last 4 hours... fingers crossed!

Good news - that puppy is lucky that your parents picked him (or he picked them, that's usually how it works). Anyone else might have given up.

    Keep us informed.

Just an update, puppy is doing great! Eating, urinating and stool normal again. I went to visit him again today and his energy level is through the roof! He's so skinny because of being sick for so long, but he will fill out. Thanks for your concern and advice.

That's great news. Through the roof huh? Now that sounds more normal for a Golden pup.
