Is there anything I can do to help my orphaned puppy poop? His mother was hit by a bus 2 days after he was born, I brought him to my home 3 days ago.. He has only pooped once since being here, he's eating lots of formula, not on mush or solids yet,. he's passed the point already where he would need stimulation to go to the bathroom, his tummy is full, he's got a big belly now, but starts shaking and whimpers when he's trying to poop.. What can I do for my new baby?

I would advise taking the puppy to the vet.

Is there something I can do for him to help ease things if he's just simply constipated? Something I can do in the meantime while we get a vet appointment? When should he be starting on mush (puppy food/formula mix)

Start now. They are usually started on mush around 3 weeks. Keep bottle feeding them though, and slowly wean them off the bottle and onto the mush.
How often are you feeding them? Try feeding them more often as opposed to larger meals, sometimes that can ease hard stool, which may cause constipation.

Have you dewormed them yet?

I just recently got 3 orphaned puppies and had a lot of problems with their bowl movements. I linked it to the commercial bought formula I was feeding them. Not only did they have diarrhea, but they also were very irregular. I'm not going to tell you to not go to the vet, because little puppies can crash and burn within 48 hours if something is indeed wrong. But it appears to me that your pup needs to get off the commercial formula. I came across a wonderful recipe that has done my pups wonders. They're pooping normally and it seems that I don't need to feed as often as I did with the commercial formula. The main ingredient is yogurt which does have natural digestive aids that help with upset tummies and constipation. I'll give the recipe...

10 oz of canned evaporated milk or goats milk (I highly recommend goats milk). DO NOT give cows milk. Dogs can't digest cows milk. If you're using the evaporated milk, you'll need to add 3 oz. of sterilized water (Baby water or boiled water). 1 raw egg YOLK, 1 cup of whole yogurt... Try to avoid using skim or fat free if at all possible. 1/2 tsp of Karo Syrup. If you can't find Karo syrup, there is a substitute that works just as good... boil 1 cup white sugar with 1/4 cup water. You can use more water if needed. Boil until sugar is dissolved. Place ingredients into a blender and blend or use a wire whisk. Be careful not to over blend and create a milk shake full of bubbles. Keep cool and discard any left overs after 7 days.. Before feeding, warm formula up to body temp (dogs are around 101 degrees).

Actually, he's on that same recipe (well the syrup I've been using in the recipe calls for corn syrup but otherwise it's the same.. He wolfs it down but he pees lots and seems to have problems with pooping.. I'm starting to get worried about him, but he does have lots of energy and plays around lots, getting bigger by the day.. my only issues with him is that he's not really taking any water in (not sure how to lap it up) and he's not pooping daily..

He finally pooped today! I was worried about worms but I inspected it a bit (GROSS!) and it's worm free :) I was told to wait until he's about 8 weeks to start deworming right?

Most puppies ideally should be dewormed starting at 4 weeks or so. About 90% of puppies are born with worms, and you won't usually see them in the feces.

Nope, no need to wait until he is 8 weeks, he can be de-wormed now.

Most pups are wormed at 4 weeks and then again at 6 weeks.
You can get the worming tablets from your vet or even some pet stores sell them. Just make sure you read the instructions carefully if you do it yourself.

I see... you may need to stimulate it him when he's done eating. I heard a cotton call works. My pups r now paper trained and they're three weeks old... but I used a sponge for them. It worked about 85% of the time

Okay So I'll start deworming him then.. I was just curious, puppies that are still on formula, how often are they supposed to defecate? I am thinking of switching him earlier onto the formula/food mush mix soon, he's drinking so much formula and very fast that he gets sick a bit..

He's getting bigger every day and is FINALLY getting regular! Haha! I'm starting to do the mush mix (food/formula) but I've never had a small breed puppy before.. What do you guys recommend for feeding small breed puppies?

Any type of food that has a small kibble to it. Wellness does have a good food for small dogs... Puppy kibbles are typically small, once the dog is a year, then switch over to the adult. Try to keep it within the small breed category.

My husband wants to make his food at home, but I can't find anything online specifying his breed's daily nutritional requirements. Does anybody have any information on this?

With puppies, just go for a good brand puppy formula - do more research on making their food before you jump into it.
