Missy is almost 2 years old, and we have had this problem for most of her life. We too thought maybe she had gotten into things, and maybe once or twice she did, however not all the time. We tested for worms, once the test came back false, yet I could actually see the worms in her stool, so we treated. She randomly vomits, usually at night, but not always. (One vet told us to break up her meals over the day so she never has an empty stomach) Then a few months ago, the mucus/bloody poop started, and it too, comes and goes. We have switched her diet to prescription diet food, we have tried the bland cottage cheese and rice, been on many rounds of antibiotics, and for a few weeks it all seems to work. Then it just starts up again. Yesterday Missy had a bowel movement that was so bloody, I thought for sure this was it, she was VERY ill. She was also burping, and wanting to vomit, so we gave her some anti-vomit medications (that her vet has me keep at home, this is how much she does this) and some pepcid (yes you can give a dog pepcid but always make sure how much, and if your vet agrees) and she calmed down some. I have chosen to go ahead and do a colonoscopy, and endoscopy with Missy, because I really need to know what is wrong. It could be as simple as irritable bowel, or as serious as Cancer. A food allergy has also been mentioned. I know it's expensive and I will go into credit card debt to do this, but for piece of mind I have to. I have not found many other users whose pets seem to have this problem, and I really wish I could be of more help to you, but I am as baffled as you are! Most days she plays, runs, etc and acts totally normal, even when she is vomiting, then the next week, she looks sad, gloomy, and is sick. I suggested this earlier, to a user, and may I also suggest to you, look into pet insurance, (I am as we speak and hope that since it's a pre existing condition I will still be considered) as it can really help with the expense. I will keep you posted as I learn more with my Missy girl.
