All of Sudden... Computer Won't Start!!
    Hi,

Yesterday I was working on my PC for couple of hrs. After I was done, I switched it off and left for some work. When I came back and tried to switch it on.. it won't start.

No fans wotsoever.. no cpu fan, no chasis fan, no smps fan. I only see a small led lighting up on motherboard. That's it! Nothing else.

Same thing happened 6 months back.. that time processor came loose... I reinstalled it.. and it was fine. But this time, I tried almost everything.. nothing seems to be working.

    1. I reinstalled RAM and Processor... no use
    2. I took out all optional components.. all cards... drives.. ide... and left only motherboard, processor and RAM. Still its dead.

Is there anything else I can do to find out what the hell is wrong with it?

What I don't understand it is.. why won't smps fan start? Is it connected to motherboard.. even last time... when same thing happened... smps fan was down.. so might be connected to motherboard somehow.

Can I check my SMPS in someway using multimeter?

    What else I can do?

    =============================
My System Config: P4 3.2 GHz with HT, Intel 875BZ motherboard, Antec Sonata II Tower, Kingston 512 MB RAM

    HELP!!

    Thanks.

I'm no hardware guru so can somebody tell me what a SMPS fan is?

Well from what you've told us, something has got fried. My guess would be the power supply. Try testing the PC with a different PSU.

    Won't Start
    Hi,
My guess is the same as the other expert, the power supply.

One way to test the power supply is pull the plug off the mobo.
Look at the plug where the hook is on your right side.
On the left row 2nd terminal up is a +5 volt wire.
This wire should have +5 volts at all times.
This is the standby terminal. With a multimeter test to see if you have power. If you do, try disconnecting everything but the HDD and The mobo. See if it boots up.
If still nothing happens, I would replace the power supply first, as it's the cheaper way to go.
    Best of luck,

It started... just for 1 min.
Well... I was trying again to get it started... after 30 minutes I gave up. Then all of sudden it started... everything was working fine... I don't know how it happened. After that I decided to put it back in tower.. half way through I decided to retest it and it again won't start.

Again I took the system out of tower... and reinstalled the cpu... it started. I then switched it off and on again.. w/o touching anything else. It did not start again.

Can anyone make anything out of it? I have no idea what's wrong it.

One thing I want to know is how smps works. I tried connection my smps with cd drive... that time my smps was not connection to anything... not to motherboard.. only cdrom. It didn't worked. There was no power to cd rom.

Is this normal? Do I need to connect smp to motherboard and then connect cdrom or it should work way I tested it?

Did you try a different power supply? It sounds like you have a short somewhere. If you haven't tried what Fredq & I suggested - try it.
