    Jail sentencing
My boyfriend has a court date on Valentine's Day. He's going because of vandalism, avoiding a cop, and for fighting with other guys... a lot... He told me that he could be going to jail for a year or paying a $2,000 fine. That seems kind of extreme. Is he right?

He won't be in there for that
    Long or maybe he could?
There's no way you can pay
    Yourself out of jail unless
He wants out on a bail?
But no matter what I think
He's going to do jail time! But
I could be wrong I'm no expert..
Just from what I know lol...
    Good luck!

Yes, he could go to jail or pay the fine. It is going to depend on what happens in court and how the judge applies the law to his case.

    Hey Mason,
Thanks for answering the post I have. Can you be more specific with your question? For example, vandalism, what exactly did he do? Did he slash someone's tire, or did he totally destroy someone's house, causing thousands in damage? What do you mean by avoid the cop? Did he avoid the police by not answering his front door when they came to his house for him, etc? Fighting with other guys, what happened? Did they get into a pushing match, or did he beat the guys over the head with a bat?
If he has prior convictions the same as these the punisment will most likely be significantly worse. More info would help. What state did this happen in? Hope that helps you out. I'll check back to see if you reply with any more info.
    Good Luck Wed.
    Bill

So here is more information. I'm not sure about the vandalism charges but he mentioned breaking and entering. By avoiding a cop, he was driving and didn't pull over when the cop's lights started flashing. And he's gotten into quite a few fist fights and the police were called at least once. There were no weapons. That's all I know.

I can give you info for GA, first there is no such thing as a vandalism expect for damage to a cemetery the charge for damage to others property, is called criminal tresspass, and you can get up to a year in jail or a 1000 fine for a misdemeanor charge on that.

If he was guity of breaking and entering, that could get him up to 10 years in jail in GA. Not pulling over for a police officer will get him some jail time most likely. And fighting does not help.

And how you can't think that him doing this should not be a lot more than a year in jail is beyond me,

I'd say that's a good way to sum it up, Fr_Chuck. Evading an officer is a $500 fine, 2nd degree misdemeanor where I'm from. Also possible jail time depending on sentencing. I've know cases where people have gone to jail just for that. That's my .02 cents. Good luck.

I think that anything beyond a year is too much
Besides the fighting, did he really hurt anyone?
And did he start the fights or was it in self defence?
I think everything will be OK, even if he's in jail for up to a year.
    Good luck with everything!

Well, I guess I can answer this question for everyone. He didn't go to jail and all he had to pay was $700... so he must not have done [B]that[B] much.
