I don't live in New York. By exchanging places, I meant countries. It's been 30 years since I've been in New York and that was only long enough for a mad rush from one airport to another. Personally, I hate the place.

Regarding Mitch's query about Memory Sticks & Flash Drives. Our UK terminology may differ from the US, but a memory stick here is a small device which (usually) plugs directly into the USB connector, and is seen by the computer as an external drive of some sort. It is simply a piece of electronic memory, which can be written to and read - just like a re-writeable CD or DVD (... or floppy disk if you're as old as me!! )

Another type of data storage we use is the memory Card, which is the little tiny card that we use in mobile phones & digital cameras. Again, this is simply an electronic memory device, but it requires a 'card reader' if it is being used outside of the device it was originally used in. There are several different formats of these cards - but a favourite here seems to be the 'SD' format. The 'card reader' is simply an adaptor which (usually) plugs into a USB connector, and enables our computer to see this card as an external drive, as it does the memory stick.

Not much different. What you call memory sticks are also called that here, but more commonly referred to as flash drives or thumb drives.

Memory cards are called memory cards.

So now I'm confused. SG, you say above that you've had more problems with flash drives than memory cards. Aren't they the same thing in 2 different packages? Or is the memory itself a different technology?

Theoretically they are the same. Both are considered solid state memory. But for some reason I've seen problems with Flash drives that I haven't seen with memory cards. Maybe it's the USB interface.

Interesting (regarding my original camcorder question), they call them camcorders with "flash memory". But if "Flash" refers to the USB interface, then their use of the term "flash memory" vs HD or tape is technically incorrect??

Now I'm off track. My actual original question had to do with using "solid state" (what they call flash) memory in camcorders vs tape or HD. Assuming no connector for the memory chips, do you think that is a reliable alternative?

I've heard that solid state memory is only good for about 1000 saves, but I'd love to get away from those pesky moving parts.
