May also try clearing out your temp folder. Go to start and in the search bar type %temp% and hit enter. Delete everything you can in that folder, and you may clear up some more space. Also running disk cleanup may help as well.

I did what you said and found the folder but I can't understand what any of the files are so I don't know if I should delete them. However, some of them appear to be large so I would like to get rid of them if possible. They are mostly numbers, they start with KB then there's a really long number. Have you any idea what that could be? Thanks for your help as always

The TEMP folder is used to store temporary files created by some programs during processing. In normal processing, they should be removed when the program closes. However , sometimes they are not. So it is highly likely they are safe to delete. If you are concerned, move them to external storage.

Usually files that start with a KB are downloaded Windows critical updates. Once they are applied they are no longer needed. To be safe though you might want to get a copy of Ccleaner. It's a free app that scans your temp folders, browser saves etc. and will remove them for you. It's a pretty safe bet that if it finds something it will be OK to remove. It installs with a standard set of programs and temp areas checked but you can go through the Windows and Application tabs and select or deselect what you want. I like to deselect RUN (In Start Menu) since they take up little room and I like to keep a list of useful run commands in there (msconfig, cmd, regedit,) so I don't have to type them each time I need them. Some people like to select Old Prefetch Data under Windows Advanced but I don't know that it saves much room (mine is checked on this Vista PC).
