Tell your mom.. it sounds like your first period, its natural and normal and she can put your mind at ease.

If its not your period she can take you to the doctor for a quick check up...

But first things first, talk to your mom.

That sounds more like spotting. But likely your period will start very soon. Anywhere from any day now to the next couple months would be my guess. It's really hard to figure out when your period will come until your cycle becomes regular, if it becomes regular. I would talk to your mom. She was your age once too and know what you're going to. She'll be able to help you get feminine hygiene products (I like to wear a pantyliner anytime I'm expecting my period, save my underwear from stains. You might consider wearing some too if you're worried about your period sneaking up) and how to best deal with the cramping and general uncomfortableness that tends to come with periods.

Why have I been so moody lately?
Here's my deal:i have been having mood changes for 2 weeks now.ill go from happy to sad to mad to depressed in just a matter of minutes.from my recent comments, everyone has been saying that its because of hormonal changes, and the fact that I might be having my very first period soon.is this why I have been so moody?

    Are these first period symptoms?
Here's my story:i am 11 years old and exactly 13 days ago,I was having these symptoms:
    Headaches
    Stomachaches
    Cramps
    Mood swings
Discharge(has gone from dark brown to light brown to white with a yellow and brown tent in just 13 days)(discharge doesn't have a smell)
    Tender breasts
Are these signs of my first period coming soon?can you tell me when it might happen?should I tell my mom?

You already asked this and I already told you. If you're still confused then you should get off the computer and go talk to your mother right now. If you still have more, different questions, then you can add to one of the threads you have already started. Do not create anymore threads regarding this same question. All of it should be kept together in one thread.

Please stop posting the same thing, over and over and over.

It really annoys the experts who will end up not helping you.

If you want to add more info, you answer your own thread.

I hope I did not lose any answers merging all of your threads

Have you talked to your mother yet?

Periods aren't always totally predictable. When I first began getting my periods, when I was your age, it started suddenly one day, was awful and lasted nearly a week. And then I didn't see it again for months. And then a few weeks between. And a couple months again. Eventually it became somewhat regular, roughly every month or so. It finally got totally regular when I began birth control, but I was about 15 then. The discharge it pretty normal, as long as there's no foul smell and no cottage cheese consistency. You'll get to know your body and what's normal for you as you continue to grow and mature. If you're ever unsure or concerned, it's always better safe than sorry and you can always talk with your doctor if you think there is something wrong.

It sounds like you might have had a short first period. The average cycle is around 28 days, but you might not have a normal cycle right away. I'd keep some pads in the bathroom and probably in your purse or school bag too. Then you can always be prepared for when it comes again. And if the discharge is bothersome, I'd try some pantyliners. I'd go to some of the major brand websites too, like kotex and always. A lot of times they have giveaways. I've gotten tons of free samples and lots of great coupons by visiting the various websites. Not only will you save money, but there's a lot of feminine hygiene products out there and it's a convenient way to try out lots of different brands and styles so you can find what's right for you.

Here's a few links to samples. They're all from the same brand, but for different products. So I'm not sure if they'll let you sign up for all of them. But you can try if you're interested.

So this IS my period?by the way,I haven't told my mom yet,I don't know really how to tell her.im not really comfortable talking to her about stuff like this.do I NEED to tell her soon?

I know that first conversation is awkward. But yes, you do need to tell her. Unless you have a way to get to the store and pay for pads and what not all by yourself.

Do you have an older sister or any other women in your life you're more comfortable with?

By the way:thanks for answering all my questions.I REALLY appreciate it!:)

Like I keep telling you, your periods will be unpredictable for a while. No one can tell you when your next period will actually come. And the discharge sound pretty normal, but again, if you're worried talk to your mom and have her take you to the doctor.

As for the cramps, there's lots of ways to relieve them. Walking will actually help. I know at first it seems awful when you just want to curl up in a ball and never move again, but once you get moving you tend to feel better. Avoid caffeine. Midol, advil, or other over the counter pain meds are usually helpful too. Also warm baths or a heating pad.

I still really think it would be best for you to talk with your mother. She's been through all of this too and knows what you're going through and how to help you.

Congrats! Your first monthly visitor arrived. I got mine the first time when I was 12, and it was just a little, I didn't even tell my mom until the next month when I actually needed a pad. It's embarrassing to tell her but really, it's okay. Just make sure you bring some pads to school for the future, I got caught several times without one!

A usual period for me lasts around a week. 17 days is a long time to have discharge, but not unheard of. If it goes on too much longer you may want to consult a doctor, even just calling a nurse or nurse hotline in your area. As for cramps, yes it is uncomfortable. Some advil should help, a heating pad on the lower back always feels good, as I usually feel cramps in my lower back. It should stop before too long. All of the colors etc you are describing are really completely normal, so relax. The white/yellow stuff is just discharge. Periods are far from glamorous. The truth of it is really pretty gross actually. I know my period is coming each month when I get grouchy and extra hungry. You most likely will not have a normal monthly schedule to begin with. It'll just come and go as it pleases.

As for telling your mom, just do it. Take a deep breath, and just say "Mom, I think I got my period." She probably will do what my mom did and just say "Oh, okay." then she went and got me some pads out of her bathroom. No need to share all the details unless you want to.

I know it all seems so crazy and confusing, but remember, every woman goes through it. You will get through this just fine!

Good. I'm glad you finally told her. I get stressing over things. But asking the same question repeatedly isn't going to make any new magic answers come up. What have you tried so far to relieve the cramps?

I have another question about this situation:is it true that you can have all the symptoms of your first period months before it actually happens?
  • Feb 6, 2011, 11:54 AM
    justcurious55

There's lots of things you can do that won't make you sleepy. Walking helps. Avoid caffeine. When you have time to relax, you can rest with a heating pad. Or you can take a warm bath. You can try aspirin. Personally I prefer midol or advil during my periods, but everyone reacts differently to pain meds. So if you've got aspirin and that's what you normally take for pain, I would start there and if it doesn't help you can try other meds.

I'm not sure about whether you experience pms months ahead of time. The white discharge you've described in previous posts I know is common ahead of time. And the moodiness wouldn't surprise me. It sounds a lot like you've already had your first period.

Thank you,ill use asprin.ive felt like this for almost 3 weeks now and it still hasn't actually happened.my sister said that you can have these symptoms months before it actually happens(she lies to me all the time,so I really don't believe her.)i trust that you are right, and that this is my first period, but I thought it would be much different than this.
  • Feb 6, 2011, 01:33 PM
    justcurious55

If you continue experiencing the symptoms, especially the cramps and any other physical pains, you need to go and talk to your doctor. While cramps and what not are totally normal during and around the time of your period, there may be other causes that need to be addressed if you are experiencing them all the time.

Unfortunately, being moody is a pretty normal part of being a preteen/teen. Do your best not to let little things get to you or take out your moodiness on those around you.

Have you actually read half of the answers I've given you? I've told you, your cycle tends to be irregular at first. It could be anywhere from a few weeks from now to a few months from now. I enjoy being able to help people, but I'm getting tired of having to repeat myself because you haven't bothered to take the time to read the answers that I've taken the time to give you.
