How can I find if a life insurance policy exists on a recently deceased parent?
I know of no internet database, probably is no such thing as it's a private matter subject to privacy laws, but ck all docs, papers, talk w/ friends, relatives, try to narrow down to an ins company name, then call each company.

Some companies have online searches for unclaimed property and or payouts - I imagine that some of these would include payouts for life policies. Maybe give that a try? Although until notified, the life company probably won't know that the perosn has passed away. Try checking their mail, becaise if its something they were still paying premiums on they might get a letter. Other then that, call advisors in the area and go from there

Well ideally, they left instructions on where all of their papers are at. Or they have life insurance papers in a file cabinet or in a safety deposit box.

You will need to go though all of the drawers at their home, go though check books to see if there was policies being paid for and so on.

I also am looking for life insurance, smart plan or other benefits that my husband said was in my name probably from his jobs almost 20years ago one company has closed what happens to benefits they hold and how can I find out name of who holds it? I cannot find any of his papers from that long ago

There are several services that will research the various companies and data bases and furnish the info to you - I have used one which was pretty good but expensive.

Other than that you have to go through old checkbooks and see if there is a record of payments, obviously look through papers and check for policies and info, see if the policy was paying a dividend.
