They don't hurt, but they are uncomfortable and if it is your first time it may hurt just a bit. You have to lie on your back and scoot your bottom to the end of the exam table and your legs go in stirrups. Make sure you aren't alone in the room with whomever is doing the test, ask for a nurse or your mother to come in with you. They take a device called a speculum that opens you up down there to allow the doctor to get a tissue sample for the test. My doctor also checks my ovaries manually. It is over pretty quick, but I am 40 and still hate the exam.
Well, they don't hurt, a little uncomfortable maybe, but definitely not painful.
Let's see.
You will undress, wrap a gown or towel around yourself. The doc will ask you to lie down and scooch your bottom to the edge of the examining table. Then you put your feet in the stirrups... at this point the doctor inserts an implement called a speculum. This is so she can see your cervix and examine it as well as take a swab that will be sent for culture. Then the speculum comes out and the doc will insert her fingers (usually just 2) and press down on your belly with the other hand to feel your ovaries (that's the uncomfortable part). Then it is all over and done with. With a good doctor it only takes about 3 minutes.

I have question my doctor recommended me to take a pap test. However, I only had sex once with my ex boyfriend and I know 100% it was our both first time. And I'm getting a blood test (which I get evrey year for a checkup) this weekend, so do you think a blood test is enough?
Unfortunately a blood test will not be enough. As a rule it is wise for a woman to get a PAP smear once a year once she becomes sexually active. This is not only to rule out STDs, but also to screen for certain female cancers.
It really is not as bad as one thinks. Once you have had one or two it just becomes routine.
Is your doctor a man or woman? If you can have it done by a woman doctor the first few times it makes the whole experience less embarrassing. I have a male doctor, always have. But remember they do this many times per day, they have seen thousands before you and will see thousands after you. It is NOTHING new to them.

Yee I have a man doctor, and he said that my mom doesn't have to know it will stay confedential since I am 16. So that's good, I just think it will be a little akward, but I huess ill go...
No, hun, your mom will never know. It is called the HIPAA law and it is all about confidentiality.
Please go, for your own good. And I applaud you for taking good care of you and your body. It is the only body you will ever have. This is coming from me, a cancer survivor.

Thank you so much! Yes my body means the world to me, and even if I think I'm okay, I still need a check up because, if there is a problem it can be fixed before its too late. My moms friend died of cancer about 2 years ago, and one of the reasons she died is because she never went for yearly checkups, and when she did go because she started feeling sick, they found out she was on her last stage of cancer :( so from then on I decided that I'm always going to go and check my body every year, even if I think there's nothing wrong with me. And thank you again for your time and help <3
You are a very smart girl, I mean VERY smart!!
Hun, I volunteer my time and my knowledge (for what it's worth, LOL) to help people. You are VERY VERY welcome.
If you have any questions, please, please do not hesitate to ask.

Hi undermyumbrella, I had my first smear test last week and it doesn't hurt, its just uncomfortable. What happens is they get you to take your pants off and lie down, they give you a blanket to put over you so you feel more comfortable. Then they put a tube in, open that up abit and put a brush in and a long cotton bud. It doesn't take long to do. It pays to do it as something like that can save your life. It only happens every 3 years. The first one you get you have to have another one after 12months. Hope this has helped you.
