I have a 7 month old Mini Silver Dapple smooth coat. He has been neutered and sheds A LOT since we got him at 10 weeks old. I'm very surprised because we also had a 12 yr old red standard which never shed. It seems the more hair I pick up the more he sheds. His coat is beautiful but it's all over the place except on him. LOL We feed him Nutro Natural Choice Lamb Meal & Rice Formula. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My experience is that Lab puppies don't shed that much their first year. They do make up for it later.

I am slow to blame problems on the chow if a dog is eating a commercial chow and little else. I think most dogs will thrive on most chows. I read many positive reports on Nutro. I was surprised by Nutro and why I don't feed it anymore (http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/nutro.html) I wouldn't have thought such a small change would have made such a dramatic difference. It is the sort of limited, anecdotal evidence that I don't like to trust. As far as I can tell, Woodhaven is just what it appears to be, a large breeder enhancing their reputation by providing objective information on dogs.

This may seem sound like a stupid reply. Do you think that maybe you just notice his hair more because he is a lighter color. I know I pay more attention to my little dog's short white hairs shedding, than I do with my dog that has long black hair. Just a suggestion. :)

Holy cow Labman! That pile is enormous! LOL

Little mac, I've noticed that my dogs have been shedding more this year than they ever have.
It was an issue I brought up with the vet at their yearly.
She said that even though my dogs are indoor dogs that the strange weather we'd had in our area is a good culprit.

Bushg, for sure our other dog never shed, I never swept up hair. When I carry this little guy my shirt is completely covered with black hair. This is the first dog I have as a puppy... could it be that he's shedding his puppy hair? I was under the impression short hair Dachshund's had somewhat coarse hair.

My sister has 3 of them and the other sis. Has 1. I never heard them mention this. It could be that it is spring and maybe they (puppies )have more hair. Like babies have down when first born.. there is a groomer on this board her name is grammadidi maybe she can help you. I was only going by my dogs( I never had puppies)

Update: I must say that since I changed his food from the Nutro, he is doing much better with the shedding. Thanks for all your replies.

Thank you for the update. Again, I am surprised at a bad report on Nutro. It is expensive and a great favorite with the ''You get what you pay for.'' crowd. Did you change protein sources as well as brands? I don't want to blame the Nutro if it was the lamb.

I am not making excuses for Nutro, I just would like to be sure what happened. It is also possible he is over shedding for a while and would have quit if you continued the Nutro. I have been brushing dogs like mad the last couple of days. Over the weekend I noticed big wads of hair coming off 11 month old Holly. When we went to pick up Aster Sunday evening from the sitter, there was a note on the door saying her father had a stroke and asking us to pick up Aster and her dog from another friend and keep him for a while. Baa, Baa, black sheep, have you any wool? Aye, aye, 3 bags full. Aster however is between sheddings, I am getting very little from her.

I certainly don't feel I have seen enough to start condemning Nutro, but with so many other chows out there, I would question risking any dog on it. This is chiping away at my idea that most dogs will thrive on most chows.

There is an old story, right old, they were riding on a train, no less. One guy looks out the window and comments ''That is a nice flock of white sheep.'' The second guy studies them until they are out of sight, then says ''Well they were white on this side.'' I try not to make comments about the side of the sheep I haven't seen. I do all I can to base my opinions on facts.

I have a mini silver dapple daschund too and it seemed to me every time I picked him up I also got tiny little what look like eye lash hairs all over me. I was told by my vet and told me that it might also be nerves. When we give him a bath I always need to wash out the tub. I have now been feeding oscar the new Eukanuba daschund formula and it seems to be reducing the amount of shedding as well as helping with his back. He had spinal surgery about 2 months ago after he slipped a disc in his back so please be careful and watch your puppy. They can slip a disc just by moving the wrong way. I would get pet insurance for your doxie. Thank goodness we had it for ours or else it would have cost us an arm and a leg to get him back to normal.

Yes, we have learn the hard way when it comes to the pet insurance. Our last dachshund also cost us an arm and leg with his Cushings Disease.
Same here when we give him a bath... it's gotten a little better I must admit after changing the food and also because of a liquid vitamin the vet suggested. Don't know which one really did it but which ever one it is has worked. Thanks for your input! :D
