?? I just got a dell dim. 8300 with win xp pro and 3Gh cpu,
I added a 40x asus cd-rom and everything was working OK for about 30 minutes and then the system couln't read the cd's on the drive any more. When I chek on device manager the properties for this device; it tell me that is working properly. Please help!

Try to reinstall , the same... there should not be any problem, Hope you are using the right drivers for the same.
