I need some help. I had two lights installed, controlled by one switch. In the place of one of the lights I installed a Hunter fan. Is working great but to use the fan I have to turn on the lights (it means the other light has to be on even if I pull the chain off at the fan). How can I separate the lights from the fan. The house electric box has two sets of wires; I think it was prepared in case someone will install a fan. The fan has white, black white/black and green wires.
Thank you

The two sets of wires might be, power in, and up to fan and light box.
If fan is first box from switch, then you could put a light/fan receiver unit in fan and
Have the wire for the light kit, go to light.
And that would also allow remote control.

How many switches do you have, and how many wires (and what colors) come from the ceiling?

I had 2 light fixtures. I changed one fixture with a fan. I have one light switch but two sets of wires in the ceiling. I imagine for each light one set of wires. I looked in switch box and I have 2 white wires taped together not connected; two gray wires each going in switch and the ground. I didn't touch any of wires (yet):)
Thank you much for the answers.

Wonder if 2 wires taped together for Fan?
Do you have 2 sets of 3 conductors going in on one box, and 3 conductors going in 2nd box?
Any extra wires in 2 boxes?

Hi, Stratmando
I'm not sure if I can explain correctly. The two light fixtures are in my family room one- way in the back another one in front close to the switch. The one in the back has one set of wires(black, white and ground, all in the white heavy cable). The one in front has the same plus another set of white, black and green in the heavy cable. The switch has two gray wires connected to switch, two white taped together and two grounds taped together. I was thinking that one of each gray, white and ground correspond to one of the sets coming from the second light fixture.
Gosh, I thought it would be easier...

My question is, the two sets of wires at the fan, how were they connected to the light that was there before? Were any of them not connected?

Sounds like you have black, white and green, in and out of 1 box(2 sets) and black, white and green at back box.
Sounds like series, if this sounds like yours, and switch worked both, then likely.
If it is, reread my first post.
Is fan close to switch, or is it in back?
