View Full Version : Hampton bay ceiling fan noise problems

Yes another question about Hampton Bay ceiling fans.

I have a Windward 11 fan installed by an electrician almost two years ago.

There is grating noise when you try to go to the top speed.

There is a humming noise all the time it is in operation. It is less noisy when the light is on!

I got the electrician back but of course that day it worked fine. As soon as he left it was noisy again.

I purchased the fan from Home Depot and they said I could take it back but that means getting it taken down again . I am not sure how long the warranty lasts.

The blades seem to be inserted properly and they do not seem to be out of balance.

It seems to be an electrical problem because of the impact of the light being on making it less noisy. Of course when you want it to work in the summer you do not need the light!

Any ideas and assistance would be appreciated.

The grating noise means something is loose.

The noise that goes away when the light is on, are you using the fan with a wall control?

I say take the fan down and take it back.

There is a remote control but no wall control.

In that case, I don't know why the fan would be quieter with the light on. It could be a problem in the receiver.

Again, I say return the fan.

I had this same problem yesterday, and it turned out to be the dimmer that I was using to control the speed of the fan. It was a normal light dimmer ($8). When I swapped it out for a normal light switch, the hum went away.

Yes, you should NEVER use a light dimmer on fan.

I have two of the same fans with remotes (upstairs and downstairs). When I turn the upstairs fan on, it will turn the downstairs on as well. Is there a way to change the codes for one of the fans so they will work independently from each other?
