I had a Casa Vieja Probe II ceiling fan (w/light; no pullchain) installed about two years ago. It has a wireless remote for fan and light operation, and when I had it installed the electrician connected it to a wall switch so I could also turn it on/off at that location without using the remote. Just recently the fan has started to malfunction: If I have the wall switch on and use the remote to turn the fan on and the light off, after about 5-10 minutes of normal operation it switches to a default state of light on/fan off. I tried several combinations (fan off/light off; fan on/light on), and if the wall switch is on it will default to light on/fan off. Everything turns off if I turn the wall switch off.

I changed the battery in the remote, but that didn't solve the problem. I read the fan instructions, and noticed that they said to NEVER operate the fan using a wall switch, as it could damage the fan (unfortunately I did not read this before I had it installed, and neither apparently did my electrician). My question is: did I permanently damage my fan, and if so is there any way to repair it?

I don't think you caused the problem by using your wall switch. Its more likely you have a bad receiver and/or remote. Ceilingfanrepair is better at diagnosing this so we'll wait for him.

If the wall switch is on and I control the fan and/or light with the remote it does not operate normally. Even if I turn the fan and light off using the remote, the light will come back on within a few minutes. It seems like the "resting" position (if the wall switch is on) is: light on, fan off.

Have you tried changing the frequency on the fan and remote?

My Probe 44 (six months old) just went dead. It's the receiver. While in the store getting a warranty replacement, another customer came in with two identical, dead receivers from his two Probe 44s. This was his third time replacing these receivers. Sounds like a Casa problem. I have a new receiver arriving in a couple of days,we'll see how long it lasts.

Receivers in most brands go dead. It's what happens when you have tiny electronics selling for $30 (the cost of a receiver) processing 3 amps or more at 120vAC.

I recommend buying fans that don't use remotes.
