:confused:My air conditioner is putting off kind of a weird smell. It doesn't coincide with any of the questions or answers I've seen so far on here. I live in a single wide mobile home and have a window unit. My A/C doesn't smell like dirty socks or anything else like that. I also understand that Freon has no smell. So I am not sure what is wrong, if anything, with my A/C. It sort of smells like the inside of a freezer.....I really don't know how to explain the smell. Like I said, it's not a foul odor but I have had a bad headache for about 3 days now and I'm 3 months pregnant so I wanted to be sure the A/C is ok. I have been running the A/C nonstop for the last 3 days because I tend to get sick from the heat and it has been HOT HOT HOT! The smell has appeared only today. The A/C in my car smells similar at times. I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice? Thank you so much.

Is this a musty smell?

You might try clening the filter and see if that helps

It's not a musty smell, I can't really describe the smell. It's kind of a cold smell like what a freezer smells like, but it's really strong.

OK, I cleaned the filter, and it slightly decreased the smell. Thanks!

If you remove the cover from the unit, you will see a coil, with the unit shut off clean the coil with an old toothbrush and warm soapy water, be sure not to bend the fins on the coil, brush them from top to bottom. Let dry and reinstall the cover. The smell you describe doesn't sound like it's dangerous, if it just smells like "cold air" this is normal, but if cleaning the filter helped, then clean the coil real good.

Thank you so much for the advice and I will have the man of the house take care of that as soon as he gets home. I was just worried about a Freon leak or what not. Thanks again and have a good day.

No problem! I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you had a freon leak, even a small one , the unit wouldn't cool very long, and it would start freezeing up.
