I've just moved from UK to Hong Kong and am having problems with connecting my laptop up to the existing internet connection at my friend's house.
I've plugged the wire in and my laptop will say that I am connected to a local network... but when I try to use the internet nothing happens and explorer keeps saying I am not connected. What do I do?

It's probably really simple but... I'm trying to connect my laptop to the internet via a router that is not wireless. I've plugged the wire in and my laptop says that it is connected to the local network. But I can't use the internet! What am I supposed to do?

Press Start >> Run >> enter "cmd" and press OK, once you got the black terminal enter "ipconfig". If the IP address says something with 169.*.*.* then you don't get a IP from your router via DHCP and either have to configure the router or set up an IP manually. If it says at IP 198.168.*.* then you have either a static ip set or you DHCP is working. The important thing here is the entry "Default Gateway" it has to be the IP Address of your Router in order for the Internet to work. With the routers dhcp this entry should have been made.
Go into Network Connections >> right click "Local Area Connection" then hit Properties and double click Internet Protocol(TCP/IP ). To set a static ip do the following (assuming that you router is using the standard IP 192.168.0.1) IP Address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.0.1 >> Hit Ok
And give it a try. Some Siemens Routers from Bell use the address 192.168.2.1 which is the same thing but you have to substitue the above IP at the 0 use a 2 instead.

Hi. Please check if you are connected to the internet via a router or hub. If so make sure you set your LAN's TCP/IP settings to obtain option. If its directly connected to the modem, please ask your friend's ISP authentication protocol if its PPPoe, DHCP or Static IP? If its Static IP, you need to configure your LAN's TCP/IP settings according to its IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway address and Primary and secondary DNS. If its PPPoE make sure that the modem has a built in PPPoE software in it, if none, you need to create a dialer on your windows Operating System by using creating new connection wizard. If its DHCP, just set your TCP/IP to obtain option. Hope this might help.

Sometimes just power-cycling the router will help too.

Unplug the router's power supply for 30 seconds, plug it back in.

Also, check the ethernet cable. If you have a second ethernet cable to try, do that.

Sounds like a DNS server problem.

You should do IPCONFIG /ALL and check the DNS Servers settings which will probably be something like 64.250.224.2 and 64.250.224.6. If they're not, have your friend do the IPCONFIG /ALL then set your DNS to what his shows. While he's at it, check to be sure the Primary Gateway is the same on your computer.

If that didn't work try to ipconfig /flushdns
