Take the thermostat back, you bought the wrong one. You need a heat pump thermostat. The "O" terminal energizes the reversing valve which changes the unit from heat to cool. The thermostat you bought uses the "W" wire to bring on the gas or oil heat. Once you get the right one, your color scheme should work. Please be sure to turn off the breakers to the inside and outside units before changing the stat, because the wires could short causing damage to the low voltage transformer.
