My toilet is leaking. Excuse my lack of technical terms... but the water is dripping from the top of the pan (where the water comes from when it is flushed) and it is dripping down the back in to the water in the pan. It does it consistently apart from for a really short while after it has been flushed. Apart from the noise being really annoying Im sure this is wasting quite a lot of water. It's a new toilet so Im not sure sure if it is a problem with the toilet that was supplied or a problem with the plumbing. Can this be fixed easily or do we need to get a plumber out?

If I understand you correctly the water's leaking out from under the lid and running down the back of the toilet tank onto the floor. Am I correct?
If so, you have a ball cock, (That thingy with the float ball) that's spraying water up and over the top edge of the tanlk.
Take the lid off. Give the float ball a little downward push. If water shot up from the top of the ballcock then check to see if the little 1/8th inch tube's connected to the top of the ballcock and runs to the white overflow tube. If the water's coming from someplace else click on back and we'll dig a little deeper. Regards, Tom

I kenw I hadn't explained it very well! The water is not dripping from the tank on to the floor. It is all happening inside the toilet bowl. It is dripping from the top of the toilet bowl (where the water comes through from the tank to fill the actual toilet up when it is flushed) then dripping down the back of the toilet bowl into the water in the toilet. Its making a constant dripping noise, so its not really leaking - just constantly dripping from the top of the bowl into the water at the bottom.

You have a bad flapper. Take your finger and run it around the flat part of the flapper. If it's wavy then it's bad and must be replaced. Let me show you how to adjust a flapper. With the flapper seated the linkage wants to have 1/4" of play. Too much play and the flapper doesn't get pulled back enough giving you a short flush. Too tight and it lets water seep past the flapper. I adjust the chain by the link and if it needs fine tuning, I bend the flush lever rod a bit untill I have the desired play in the linkage. One more thing about a flapper. you will see where the old flapper hooks onto the base of the white overflow tube. On a older type with no hooks the flapper has a ring that slips down over the overflow tube to the seat. If your tank has hooks, take a sharp knife or scissors and cut the neoprene ring off on the marks provided and hook the flapper on the hooks. Leaving the ring on will interfere with the flush. The water level in your tank should be 3/8 to 1/2" below the top of the overflow tube when the tank's filled. Good luck, Tom
