My son was sent home early today because of cramping in his stomach, diarrhea, feling warm to the touch, but the nurse said that he did not have a fever. His sister was not sick and I am not sick, so I don't think that it was something that he ate, as we all ate the same things last night and this morning and we are just fine.
I don't know if it is the flu, because I always thought that there was a fever with the flu. Is it possible to have a viral infection without the presence of a fever?
Are there any doctors or nurses out there who can give me the symptoms of what a viral infection may or may not include? Does the above sound like a viral infection? My ex husband is insinuating that our son may have food poisoning. What are the symptoms of food poisoning as well?
Thanks!!

It is very possible to have a viral infection without a fever. I can't give specific symptoms of viral infections as they can attack different parts of the body and can have different symptoms.
Food poisoning would start approximately 8 hours after ingestion, depending on the food source itself.
Just a thought as I don't know the age of your son and where he is in school, could it have been due to stress or exams?
But it really sounds pretty viral to me.

School is almost over and he actually did not want to come home early, as he said that he was having too much fun. His sister had similar symptoms over this past weekend (Saturday) - lack of a real fever but warm none the less. She also had diarrhea and did not want to eat. Normally, she eats me out of house and home. It went away within 24 hours. My son did not elicit his symptoms until today (Thursday) and was at 11:30 a.m. which was 3-4 hours after he ate breakfast, the very same breakfast that his sister ate. I know that I have nothing to worry about, but I just want to cover my bases.
Thanks again!!

Sounds like a virus to me. It can take several days for it to manifest itself from one child to another.

I have been stircken with several virus this year, because my three year old started school in January.I've had rotavirus, and a few others I've yet to name.Cramping and vomiting is the first sign of a virus, but almost always fever comes along within the same day. There is a test a dr. can do to check for rotavirus or a viral panel via bloodwork.Wash your hands as much as possible.
