I am planning on adding a utility sink to my laundry room, I was planning on tapping into the water lines and drain to the washer. I have not opened up the wall yet so I don't know the exact configuration of the drain, but my question is if I run the sink drain of off the drain from the washer will the water from the washer back up into the sink? I wish I could say, " Sure, go ahead and tie the laundry tray into the washer stand pipe." but I can't and here's why. The discharge from the washer enters the stand pipe at about 36". The drainage from the utility sink would enter the stand pipe at 18". The washer trap will rough in at about 6". That leaves only 12" of drop before the washer discharge hits the trap. Now the reason the stand pipe is 36" off the floor is because the washer pump discharges with great force and will back up a ways on the stand pipe before draining past the trap. Water, like electricity, will seek the path of least resistence. It will be much easier to back up in a sink that has no trap then to force itself around a trap located only 12" below it. I hope I've explained it understandably. You may still tie to the washer drain line but you must connect downstream from the washer trap and trap and vent the utility sink.
