View Full Version : Do I have too many computers connected to one network?

We have a main computer. There are 2 laptops and 3 computers that are wireless and have all been operating fine. Yesterday my husband bought a new laptop, when he's connected my computer is choppy and takes longer than usual to load. Could his new laptop be slowing me down because it's an extra connection running off the same network? Can there be too many connections or is that not possible?
Thanks
Kae

AKaeTrue,

There is definitely such a thing as too many computers on one subnet but not in your case. At the most conservative of estimates 32 is the magic number. With today's newer network switches this number can go significantly higher. You're obviously no where near that. I would say that the problem you're experiencing is caused by something else.

Are there any difference's when this new machine is on the network or when your machine isn't?

When was the last time you did some maintenance on it ?
Have a look for one of my C&P's on the subject.
May just be a case of Windoze cludge taking over ;)

Another thought that crossed my mind as I read through Curlyben's response was that if this machine is new perhaps it is downloading a myriad of new updates in the background which might be congesting your Internet connection. I'd say leave it on for a while and see if the problem goes away presumably after the updates have finished.

Thanks to the both of you.
My computer is clean.
I'll have some free time tonight to read through.
And yes it has been updating to no end.
Every time we go to turn it off, it says it's installing updates and will power off when finished.
Mine only slows when the new one is on.
