I am trying to connect to a friends computer via remote desktop, he has sent the invite, I have tried to log on, but it keepds coming back with an error of unresolved host name, I need to get this working so I can repair his system. The other way remote assistant doesn't seem to work. He is not very literate on anything that requires specific computer knowledge. He runs Xp Pro, I am running XP hoome, according to my reference book I can join his on a complete control desktop, everything seems right but the unresolved host name is the steady error.

I think its just the opposite. A XP Home user can set an invite, but you need XP Pro to actually make the connection.

Remote Desktop and Remote Assistant are 2 different ways of making a remote connection to another PC, and tend not to be used together.
Remote Assistance - If you friend sends you the invite, open the attached file that is sent in the invitation email, and enter the agreed password when if required. If you have problems connecting, it could be because either PC could have Windows Firewall running with the "On with no Exceptions" option set.
Remote Desktop - If you are tyring to connect over the internet using Remote Desktop, you should specify the IP address of the PC you wish to connect to. The Remote PC should be set up to allow remote desktop connections.
Gunghorj, in you case it sounds that you are trying to connect to your friends PC using Remote Desktop, but are specifying the PC name and not the IP address of his PC, which would point to why you are receiving the "unresolved host name" error.
What is happening is your PC is trying to resolve the PC name specified to an IP address, however your friends PC name won't be registered on the internet.
