I did this essay in high school too, it seems most people I've talked to have to write this one.

I don't have to write it but I thought it was a good subject to write a persuasive essay on... im just wondering what people think about them.
What do you think about school uniforms? Are you for or against them?

I am against school uniforms. I would never go to a school that required uniforms. I think that it takes away your individuality and that clothes are part of your personality. It would be nice to not have to worry about kids wearing inapproprate clothes and things like that but I think that teens need to learn to be responsible about that because in a few years they will have to go to college or get a job and make those decisions on their own.

I went through the Catholic school system back in the late '50's through 1970. Yes, we had school uniforms, but not until we got to grade seven. The biggest benefit to this was you never had to wonder what to wear or if you were going to wear something someone else was going to make fun of. There was no competition in the glamour girl section for cutest clothes. There was a wide mix of students in our school, from the very poor to the quite wealthy and having uniforms took away that stigma.
For example, when I was in eighth grade, one of my classmates died in a bus accident. The Principal decided that we could wear our best clothes that day for attending the Mass. Two of the students came from very poor families and did not have best clothes. The day before the funeral our teacher told us that we were all to wear the uniforms. Made sense then and makes sense now.
Individuality was left for events like attending a game, a dance, a concert, or being involved in Student Council activiities.
