I live in Vermont. My 16 year old daughter had sex with a 31 year old man last year she is now 17. I tried to file charges. But was told that in vt the legal age of consent is 16.is this true or can I still do something about this.

I do not know the laws of Vermont, but if I were you that would not stop me from trying to find out. It is just not right for a 31 year old man to take advantage of a 16 year old girl, she is not even old enough to know the difference in consent and Rape. I would bet my life on the fact that this guy had no other interest in your daughter than to have sex with her. But he was probably promising her the world.
Good luck to you I hope you find a way to prosecute the bastard.

16 is the legal age of consent, so if your daughter agreed to have sex with him because she was in love, or just wanted to. This is not rape in your state. Age of Consensual Sex in the USA (http://www.coolnurse.com/consent.htm)

If you had told him to stay away from your daughter and he still saw her you may have a few things "interfereing with custody"

Agree with Fr_Chuck. I too had difficulty with who my daughter was dating while underage. Couldn't do anything about the age of consent but contact the juvenile justice department. You can charge him with custodial interference or contributing to the delinquency of a minor (not solely reserved for alcohol). There are options but you have to be willing to go through the steps. Your main problem my in fact turn out to be your daughter. It's much harder to get her to follow rules you place. Truly hope things get better. Cathy
